Come summer, the throngs of visitors to the Union Market area shopping for locally sourced products will have a few more options from Wards 7 and 8, an area of the city whose maker community has traditionally gotten a lot less attention than its neighbors on the other side of the Anacostia River.

Welcome to The Village, the brainchild of Ryan Williams, Mahammad Mangum and Kevon King, coming to Fifth St. NE later this year. The trio, who have worked at restaurants around town from the casual, comfy Big Bear Cafe to white-tablecloth spot Bibiana, have leased a 200-square-foot space to launch a mini version of the larger Village market they hope to open down the road.

“We want to feature all local vendors, but really highlight the people from the underserved communities in D.C., particularly Wards 7 and 8,” Williams said in an interview. That means working with Ward 7 coffee roaster Penny Brews and loose-leaf tea company Good Thoughts Tea Co. Given the location, the owners also plan to highlight Ward 5 products, including bagels from Buffalo & Bergen and smoked products from Ivy City Smokehouse.
